I'm not that much of a gamer, and even less of a console gamer, but the Halo games are far and away my favourite XBox games. By how much? Straight up, I literally bought an XBox so I could play Halo on it. All right, other games too, but Halo was definitely what made it happen. It's even the limited-edition green XBox set with the Halo logos on it that comes with a copy of Halo. I went to a midnight opening when Halo 2 was released. And, like everyone else, I felt let down by the ending, but the rest of the game was worth the wait. I'm holding of getting an XBox 360 until Halo 3 comes out because it's the only game for it that I really want. This also means it doesn't hurt to wait for the 360 to come down in price, too. I even went to a Halo tournament once, and got my arse kicked soundly.

Hard to say exactly what sells the game to me. I know, there are good graphics, animation, virtual physics, gameplay, all the rest of that... I think this all just adds up to a game that's fun to play. The story's not bad, either, and there's a reasonably developed Halo cast and universe in there. I'm actually a sucker for a decent supporting cast, come to that. Now that I think about it, the story's a bit different in that the Master Chief is one of not-very-many gaming protagonists who is fighting on behalf of the powers that be who govern his world. That doesn't happen as much as it used to. Even in games where the hero's a cop, it seems they 'go rogue' pretty soon, even if they are just disobeying the standard-issue Brass Who Don't Get It or have been Set Up. In other games, you play a criminal, or you've gone 'off mission', or your fight is pure survival, or even some other mixture. I'm not sure that that's anything to do with why I like the story or anything, but it does make it different from many (not all, just many) of its peers.
